The institute’s programmes are in six key areas:

    1. Governance: explores issues that help promote good governance such as the defense of media rights and freedom of expression, skills development for media, civil society to professionally engage governance processes and institutions, and government personnel.
    2. Pluralism: engages the themes of democratization of media/communication processes and institutions; popular access to a diversity of media institutions; the professional management of the media as market successes and viable institutions.
    3. Peace & Conflict: positions the media as a crucial positive instrument in the prevention/management of conflicts; and communication as the ultimate in restoration of relationships and peace-building.
    4. Health and Environment: focuses on addressing health and environmental issues through the application of communication initiatives.
    5. Gender: situates gender equality as central to development-oriented media engagement.
    6. Technology: works to increase the capacity of practitioners in various sections to fully participate in the modern digital work environment and help bridge the digital divide.

IMS Four-pillar format for programme delivery is in place as follows:

    1. Research and Documentation – engage in the study of media/communication issues and trends of contemporary relevance; sources, collates, and archives data on various subjects for appropriate dissemination to local and international professionals and organizations.
    2. Training – conducts training programmes, workshops, seminars, conferences, etc, on various issues for professionals and other groups from diverse backgrounds.
    3. Publishing – publishes books, monographs, journals, and newsletters (print and online) on various communication subjects for worldwide distribution.
    4. Networking/Advocacy – provide linkage services, which bring together individuals, groups, and governance institutions to forge the synergies of collective initiatives on process, policy, and institutional reforms.
